Magallanes Andrea

Team Games

Andrea is a Physical & Health Education and French teacher with the Toronto Catholic District School Board in Canada.
She has over 15 years experience in Teaching and Leadership with youth, including working in language schools with students from all over the world.
Andrea specializes in the teaching of the TGFU (Teaching Games for Understanding) model in Physical Education, which taps into children’s inherent desire to play. The concept is teaching children games, by playing games. The TGFU model is now a method taught by Physical Educators around the world.
Andrea is also fluent in English, Spanish and French.

The complexity of sport is what makes it so beautiful! Teaching or explaining that complexity however…now that, can be ugly.
Aspects of sport such as defense, offense, tactical solutions, strategies etc. may be difficult to understand for some adults- let alone students at the elementary school level!

Within each TGFU session, a certain sport-specific concept or focus will be incorporated into the game presented; Each game is not only inclusive, they are incredibly fun! Using non-traditional games as the vehicle for teaching, creates a welcoming environment for students who may not be the “natural-born-gifted athlete.” New/ foreign games, allow for a level playing field, self-esteem to remain unharmed, and offers a chance for everyone to shine. Students are then able to better comprehend the concept presented, and truly understand the reason or ‘goal’ of the game (and thus the name, “TGFU”)

In short, the TGFU model helps support the development of transferable skills, and promotes an increase in self-confidence among students. Each game fosters cooperation, team-work, and an opportunity to learn and understand different concepts-before scaring them away with sport-specific games and drills.
Join in and feel like a kid again. (You won’t be disappointed!! ☺)
