Lesson Overview

Introduction to Softball Fundamentals

Softball: Teaching Offensive and Defensive Game Play

In this session we will explore the essential techniques and strategies of softball, focusing on throwing, catching, and batting mechanics. Participants will engage in progressive drills that can be adapted for different age groups and skill levels. Special attention will be given to teaching cues, skill breakdown, and practice structures that promote both individual skill development and team play. No prior experience with softball is necessary-this session is designed to provide teachers with adaptable activities to bring back to their own programs.

This lesson will highlight how to introduce game concepts such as base running, situational hitting, and fielding strategies. Through small-sided and modified games, participants will learn how to scaffold complex game play into manageable teaching progressions. Emphasis will be placed on how to make softball inclusive and engaging in a PE setting while still reinforcing tactical awareness and teamwork.
